#DECEMBOND 002 - “From Russia with love”
Dr. No may be the first Bond film but From Russia with Love is the first true Bond film. From Russia contains most of the essential elements: starting with the gun barrel shot, a pre-title sequence, then to a full on bond title with lyrics, Q’s gadgets make their first appearance, and John Barry on the soundtrack.
From Russia also ups its cinematography game, it’s a beautiful film with amazing locations. From The Grand Bazaar, to the rat filled sewers, to the domes on the Hagia Sophia, ridding on the Orient Express, the canals of Venice, this is a true travel film.
Robert Brownjohn replaces Maurice Binder on this film and his titles are pretty great, projecting on almost nude female dancers, the type dances across their bodies.

This is also the first film to have Q and Blofeld in it. Q dons’t even have his title at this point, only referred to as from Q Branch. He equips James with his least flashy gadgets ever; An attaché case with hidden gold sovereigns, ammo, a throwing knife, a folding sniper rifle and a trap triggered tear gas bomb. Blofeld like Q isn’t properly named, only called Number 1 but he does have his big white cat.
Couple other notes:
• James doesn’t show up until 18 minutes in.
• James has a returning girlfriend, Sylvia Trench
• Robert Shaw is awesome and should get a lot more love.
• Daniela Bianchi should have been in everything.
Next up Goldfinger!
